Anamosa Chooses Olweus for Bullying Prevention
After researching multiple options, the Anamosa Community School District has chosen Olweus as the Bullying Prevention Program to be implemented in the fall of 2008. Olweus became the program of choice for two main reasons. We were looking for something that was suitable for all grade levels plus flexible enough so that we can customize the learning experiences to meet the needs of Anamosa students.
As stated on the Olweus web site: "The Olweus [pronounced ol-VEY-us] Bullying Prevention Program is a comprehensive, school-wide program designed for use in elementary, middle, or junior high schools. Its goals are to reduce and prevent bullying problems among school children and to improve peer relations at school. The program has been found to reduce bullying among children, improve the social climate of classrooms, and reduce related antisocial behaviors, such as vandalism and truancy. The Olweus Program has been implemented in more than one dozen countries around the world." (Note: Olweus is also now being implemented at the high school level in some schools).
Olweus has been proven to produce these results:
*A 30-70 % reduction in student reports of being bullied and
bullying others
*Significant reductions in student reports of general anti-social
behavior
*Significant improvements in classroom order and discipline
*More positive attitude toward school and schoolwork
